As the summer draws to a close and the kids are going back to school, there is still no end in sight to the high temperatures. If you’ve noticed that your vehicle’s A/C is having trouble keeping up with the rising temperatures outside, Capital Eurocars can help.

Your air conditioning unit is made up of several different components that must work together in harmony to keep you and your passengers cool on even the shortest journeys. Often times a simple recharge of refrigerant can solve any cooling problems, but there are often larger issues lurking.

Dirty condenser — The condenser is the heat exchanger mounted in front of the radiator. It cools the high pressure refrigerant vapor after it exits the compressor so it can condense into a liquid. If the condenser is full of leaves, bugs and road debris, air flow through the unit may be blocked to the point where little cooling occurs. Cleaning the condenser should cure the problem.

Inoperative condenser cooling fan — The condenser often has its own separate electric cooling fan. This fan should come on and remain on when the A/C system is operating. If the fan motor, motor relay or wiring is defective, the fan may not be working.

Air or moisture contamination — For the refrigerant inside the system to do its job properly, it must not be contaminated with air or moisture. Air reduces the cooling efficiency of the system while moisture can freeze and form ice that causes blockages in orifice tubes and metering valves. Air and moisture contamination may be the result of unrepaired leaks in the system, or failing to vacuum purge the system prior to recharging it with refrigerant.

Blockages — Debris or rust in the system may plug up the orifice tube or metering valve that admits refrigerant into the evaporator. If this vital point becomes obstructed, the flow of refrigerant may be restricted or blocked causing a loss of cooling — and possible compressor damage as well in systems that rely on oil circulating with the refrigerant for lubrication.

Mechanical problem — These include things like metering valve failures, compressor wear, a compressor clutch that fails to engage, bad pressure switches, etc.

No matter what symptoms your A/C is experiencing, the competent A/C technicians at Capital Eurocars will pinpoint the problem and have you back on the road in no time.

How does BMW separate the i’s from the M’s? Forgetting j, k, and l, BMW jumps the alphabet and goes straight to s. And the s of the new 335is ditches the fog lights for improved cooling and adds more power, black exterior trim (grille, mirrors, window trim, tailpipes), an additional radiator, and a throaty exhaust note.

Its engine is a souped-up version of the N54 twin-turbo, 3.0-liter inline-six that has powered BMW “35” models since 2007. A single-turbo unit (N55) motivates current 335 models (300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet, same as the old N54). The 335is’s N54 makes 320 horses and comes with an overboost feature. When the engine is under high load, at low rpm, the turbochargers produce an additional 2.9 psi of boost, for a total of 14.5, in bursts lasting no longer than seven seconds. This yields a 330d-like 370 pound-feet of torque—38 more than standard.

Our test car came fitted with BMW’s DCT dual-clutch automated manual – new to non-M threes and exclusive to the 335is. This new application of the tranny might be BMW’s best yet, as it lacks the hesitant first-gear engagement found in the DCT-equipped M3. Activating sport mode removes respite in upshifts, downshifts, and throttle response.

At the track, the 335is backs up its power claims, proving to be the quickest 335 ever. It snaps off a quarter-mile in 13.3 seconds at 108 mph. While the car comes with launch control, we made it run quicker by just mashing the gas pedal from a standstill. Understeer-free skidpad grip is near the top for 3-series cars, too, at 0.93 g.

The 335is can effortlessly lead a double life as sports coupe or highway cruiser. That versatility is the primary reason we are so enamored of the 3-series.

We’re in the countryside outside Cologne, Germany, where the roads meander past identi-kit villages built on the cheap in the postwar world of the 1950s and 1960s. The area is thoroughly German and thus an ideal setting for the 2011 Porsche Panamera V6.

A village gives way to an open stretch of road. Pull the left shift paddle twice and the PDK dual-clutch automated manual transmission slips down a couple of gears. The V6 gathers voice, spins past 4,000 rpm and starts to deliver meaningful thrust.

Not the Cayenne V6
Let’s try to unravel what is at first glance a confusing situation. Porsche now offers two V6 engines, both of which have a displacement of 3.6 liters and produce 300 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. The first came our way in the Porsche Cayenne and continues in the newly introduced second-generation model. This new V6 in the Panamera is actually a derivative of the Porsche V8 introduced by the 2010 Porsche Panamera.

At first glance, this overlap in V6s seems like some product planner’s balls up, but Porsche says there is a solid rationale at work. The Cayenne’s V6 engine came from VW, part of the Porsche and VW agreement to share the development costs of the sport-utility that became the Porsche Cayenne and Volkswagen Touareg. It’s a narrow-angle engine with undersquare cylinders, so it proved too tall and skinny to fit under the low, sleek hood of the 2011 Porsche Panamera.

Porsche therefore took the bold decision to develop a new V6 based on its own V8. As a result, the new V6 shares the 90-degree angle between its cylinder banks of the V8. Porsche says the V6 shares 40 percent of the V8’s parts and it offers direct injection, variable valve timing for the intake camshaft, plus Porsche’s variable valve lift system.

The Fuel Economy Special
At first glance, the output of this new 3,605cc V6 might seem modest, as it develops 300 hp at 6,200 rpm and 295 pound-feet of torque at 3,750 rpm, which seems barely enough for a car that weighs 3,880 pounds in two-wheel-drive trim. The Panamera S V8 offers 400 hp and the Panamera Turbo V8 can deliver 500 hp.

The Panamera’s sprinting ability is undeniably compromised by its V6, of course. While the Turbo gets to 100 km/h (62 mph) from a standstill in 4.0 seconds and the S reaches the same mark in 5.2 seconds, the V6 will get you there in 6.0 seconds (5.8 seconds if you opt for the high-performance Sport Chrono package that includes launch control).

The PDK system also has been tuned to complement an automated stop/start system for the V6 that silences the engine at stoplights. This fuel-saving measure is now being widely applied to small cars by a growing number of European manufacturers, but it’s rare in an engine of this displacement and output. When you come to a halt, the engine stops; take your foot off the brake and the engine restarts. It’s simple and affordable, and it helps the U.S.-specification Porsche Panamera V6 achieve an EPA-rated 18 city and 27 highway mpg. In comparison, the Panamera S with its normally aspirated V8 gets just 16 city and 24 highway mpg.

Efficient Driving
The Porsche V6 weighs 66 pounds less than the normally aspirated V8 and has been moved 0.6 inch closer to the rear bulkhead of the engine compartment. Open the hood and there’s now sufficient space between the engine and the nose to house a sizable briefcase, and the bottom line is the car’s balanced weight distribution of 52 percent front/48 percent rear.

Porsche’s engineers reckon they’ve introduced subtle tuning revisions to the 2011 Porsche Panamera V6’s suspension that produce greater ride comfort, and they like the results so much that they’ve also incorporated them into the Panamera’s V8-powered models. While a conventional suspension of springs and dampers is standard equipment, our test car has the optional air suspension with active, driver-adjustable dampers.

The Panamera remains a hugely accomplished car. With the dampers set to Comfort, the ride quality is excellent and it diminishes little even if you switch to Sport. For such a big car, the Panamera changes direction remarkably well and the cornering grip is prodigious.

We drove both the two- and four-wheel-drive versions of the new car, the Panamera and the Panamera 4, and the lower output of the V6 means traction is unlikely ever to be a problem in either car.

Design Language
Even the most devoted Panamera spotter will struggle to discern the V6 from its grander siblings. The side window surrounds are now matte black instead of chrome and the exhaust pipes are oval instead of round, but that’s about it.

The Panamera’s interior remains a triumph. Ample space for four adults, a distinctive style and immaculate build quality make for a hugely convincing proposition. Just go easy on the options list or you’ll end up paying more for a V6 than you would for a Turbo.

Girls love the bug. Guys like the Bugatti.

Attracted by its price and practicality, women are more likely to purchase a Volkswagen Beetle than any other automobile, according to a study by Truecar.com. Men, however, prefer the more masculine GM trucks and expensive luxury sport vehicles.

Although only 36 percent of new car buyers are women, they account for 56 percent of new Beetle owners.

“It fits the description of what women want in a car,” Truecar’s Jesse Toprak told ABCNews.com.

“It’s cheap to maintain and own. It gets good gas mileage. It’s practical to get around in big cities yet it’s stylish to drive in hip metropolitan areas.”

In the men’s category, the study showed a predilection for big cars and big dreams.

In addition to bulky GM trucks, men also stated their preference for high-powered vehicles like the Bugatti and Ferrari (though how these guys plan on paying the $2 million price tag for that Bugatti is unclear!).

The J.D. Power study ranks Mercedes-Benz higher than Lexus, for the first time in 21 years.

In the 2010 J.D. Power and Associates US Initial Quality Survey, Mercedes-Benz ranked higher than Lexus – the first time in 21 years. Porsche AG came first, and was trailed by Honda Motor Co.’s Acura division.

Mercedes got third place, from sixth in 2009. But Lexus fell from the top slot in 2009 to place fourth this year. The J.D. Power survey has been ongoing for 24 years. And before Lexus arrived in the US in 1989, Mercedes-Benz had ruled the quality scene. In particular, Mercedes took first place in initial quality in 1987, fell to second place in 1988, got the title back in 1989 and lost it to Lexus in 1990. In the last few years, and especially with Mercedes-Benz USA CEO Ernst Lieb in the helm, Daimler AG’s Mercedes brand has been doing what it can possibly do to regain its premier status in the luxury-car world.

Throughout most of the year, Lexus has somehow managed to defy gravity when it comes to sales. Now comes this today from Bloomberg: Mercedes-Benz may poised to overtake Lexus as the sales leader among luxury brands this year.

Lexus has seen 19% sales growth in the first half of the year. During much of the year, Lexus seemed to be shrugging off partent Toyota’s safety troubles when it came to sales impact. But Germany’s Mercedes, Bloomberg points out, is sailing with a 25% increase.

Lexus’s market share may dip to 1.98% this year from 2.1% in 2009, falling behind both Mercedes-Benz and BMW, Bloomberg quotes market researcher Edmunds.com as saying. BMW is the world’s top-selling luxury auto brand.

It helps that Mercedes has a bevy on new models about to show up, including that revised R Class hauler, pictured above. Its big seller, the midsize E Class sedan, already made an impressive debut.

“It’s very likely Mercedes-Benz may take over the lead this year,” said Jesse Toprak, vice president of industry trends for researcher Truecar.com in Santa Monica, California.

Bloomberg found that Toyota is well aware of its situation.

“It will be a battle,” says Jim Lentz, president of Toyota’s U.S. sales unit. “The Lexus customer is really discerning about quality issues.”

An impact with an automobile will crack a human’s bones like lobster claws at a clambake; an outcome Volvo aims to fight with technology. Pedestrian Detection with Full Auto Brake, a system that uses radar and cameras to stop the car and avert mauling pedestrians, makes its debut on the 2011 Volvo S60. While a visit to the recent Wellesley, Massachusetts stop of the Naughty Volvo Tour at Lee Imported Cars didn’t net us any wheel time, we got our first chance to get hands-on with the new S60 outside of a convention hall.

Volvo is introducing the 2011 S60 to consumers with the Naughty Volvo Tour, and we crashed the party to spend some time pawing the company’s newest mid-size sedan. The S60 is thoroughly redone inside and out. The exterior is at once familial and more bold. In the cabin, materials are high quality, with typically comfortable Volvo seats that may not be as aggressively bolstered as the “sport seat” moniker would suggest. The S60s interior design follows Volvo’s clean, contemporary themes, updated with more features and options to stay competitive. A variety of modern exterior and interior colors further dispel the eons-old stereotype of bland, earth-toned Volvos.

The “naughty” part of the S60 refers to its sharp styling and driving dynamics that Volvo says are on par with BMW and Mercedes. There was no opportunity to get behind the wheel to verify the latter, but we did get a ride-along demonstration of the Pedestrian Detection feature. Integral to the promotional tour, Volvo is showing off this system as reminder that the company hasn’t abandoned safety as its classical stock in trade.

Pedestrian Detection with full Auto-Brake is a lot like the Volvo City Safety system that bowed on the XC60. The end result of both technologies is that the car stops before impacting an object, as our test of City Safety demonstrated. Pedestrians present a much smaller profile than a vehicle, however, so Pedestrian Detection uses both an advanced radar unit mounted in the grille and a camera in the windshield to find humans, versus City Safety’s single optical radar. Like City Safety, the Pedestrian Detection system is designed to work at city speeds, and Volvo’s aim is to reduce the 4,700 annual pedestrian deaths resulting from auto impacts in the United States. When Pedestrian Detection senses a collision with a person is imminent, it first sounds a warning tone and flashes an LED atop the dashboard to alert the driver. If the alarm goes unheeded, the car will apply its brakes at full power in time to come to a full stop. The demonstration worked as planned, without repeating any of the embarassing mishaps that occurred earlier this year.

Just as fellow Swedish brand Saab is launching the new 9-5 in the full-boat Aero trim, the tip of the S60 spear is the S60 T6. The car follows the script that new Volvo models have used for generations: Innovate with safety and technology, evolve the styling, and do the family proud. While our time with the S60 was brief, it served to whet our appetite for an S60 to visit the Autoblog Garage, something that’s set to happen in the coming months. Stay tuned…

Have you ever bumped into a person and can’t remember his or her name? How often do you forget where you parked the car at the mall or grocery store? Do you frequently lose your glasses, keys or other items?

Most of us admit we have a problem with our memory every so often. But is there a way to flex our memory muscles, just as we go to the gym to strengthen our bodies? It’s an important question that is being asked by researchers who are on a quest to unlock the mysteries of Alzheimer’s disease.

Alzheimer’s is the most common form of dementia among older adults. It affects parts of the brain that control thought, memory and language and can seriously diminish a person’s ability to carry out daily activities.

Although scientists are learning more every day, right now they still do not know what causes Alzheimer’s disease. As many as 5 million Americans suffer from this debilitating disorder, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control.

K. Anders Ericsson is the Conradi Eminent Scholar in Psychology at Florida State University. Currently he and a Chinese researcher are studying a Chinese student who has memorized more than 60,000 random decimals of the mathematical constant pi. Their research has shown the student’s memory is not abnormal; rather, his amazing memory is the results of years of training using mnemonics.

A mnemonic is the process or technique of improving or developing one’s memory. Ericsson says effective memory is based on meaningful associations.

“Most information is inherently meaningful, such as hearing that a friend is getting married,” he explains. “Some information – such as names of people and streets, shopping lists and phone numbers – lack immediate meaning. For that type of seemingly meaningless information, methods for creating meaningful association are useful.

“There are many different memory techniques, depending on the type of material and in what context one needs to recall it,” Ericsson says. “For example, an effective technique to learn somebody’s name involves associating it with a related, meaningful word. My name is Ericsson, and some might know the cell phone company Ericsson. To remember my name, one can imagine my face with a cell phone in my mouth. Next time you see me, you will be reminded of the image with the cell phone in my mouth, and then you can recall my last name.”

Ericsson adds that, just as with muscular strength, your ability to remember increases when you exercise your memory.

“There are some interesting parallels between physical exercise and memory,” he says. “If you are a couch potato and never engage in vigorous physical activity, your strength and conditioning will be poor. If you engage in some activity, such as tennis, you will be able to maintain a decent level of performance, but that level of performance will not necessarily translate to other activities, such as swimming and raking your yard.”

If you want to improve strength, Ericsson says, “you need to push yourself beyond your comfort zone, and you will get gains for the activity that you train. Similarly, you can improve your memory by training the memory with the particular types of information that you want to improve.”

Tallahassee resident Beatriz M. Miyar took a special interest in memory when her mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in December 2006. Miyar has been working with her mother on ways to improve her memory and slow the development of the disease in a holistic manner. Miyar’s primary area of research was holistic medicine when she earned her Ph.D. in adult and continuing education. In her field, she practices and teaches “lifelong learning.” She continues doing research and has created a nonprofit group now in development called Healing Futures Institute to support research and educate the public on holistic medicine.

Miyar believes people can improve their memories with a holistic approach.

“Holistic medicine implies the interconnectedness of mind, body, spirit and emotions – and the power of each to affect the other, thus treating the body as a whole being,” she says. “The focus is in bringing balance – healing (from an imbalance/illness) – at its source by triggering the innate abilities of the body to heal itself.”

Miyar contends memory can be improved when a person eats a proper diet, takes vitamins and supplements, exercises and uses techniques to deal with stress – stress and fatigue are key culprits in memory decline.

“Physical exercise is very important; it increases the amount of oxygen that goes into our brain,” she says. “Oxygen is our lifeline. Increasing intake via exercising (and) different breathing techniques is crucial.”

There is much debate about whether certain foods or dietary supplements can improve or maintain memory. Ericsson says that other than a healthy diet and exercise, he doesn’t know of any other advantages that can come from specific foods or supplements.

But Miyar says her personal experience with her 88-year-old mother points to other conclusions.

“Her memory and ability to function were rapidly declining since her diagnosis in 2006. Six months into this, I took her to a holistic cardiologist in Miami, Dr. Roy Heilbron, who immediately took her off Lipitor – saying it robs the mind of its memory – and put her on different supplements …. (He explained) these supplements would help increase the oxygen flow to the brain, allowing the pharmaceutical drugs for memory (Aricept and Namenda) that she was taking to do a better job. Within three months of taking these supplements, her physical energy and mental cognition noticeably increased. She will tell you that these supplements are what are keeping her so well.”

Dr. Angela Spencer, the director of the Stroke Program and the Memory Clinic Director at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital, says she believes we all can improve our memory.

“The brain has a remarkable plasticity,” she explains. “We know after stroke some of the previously functioning brain cells die, yet survivors often recover most of their lost faculties as the surrounding, unaffected brain cells may take over the work of the injured or dead cells. This includes not only the physical but the mental functions, such as speech, thinking, etc.

“Much as we nourish and exercise a muscle before and while demanding extra performance from it, we do the same for the brain,” she says. “It is logical that we cannot go wrong by mental exercises.”

Ericsson says his research has found that if people practice their memory for a particular task, then their performance in that task improves.

“Doing crosswords leads one to be better at doing crosswords,” he says. “The best strategy is to practice those situations that one wants to improve one’s memory in. There does not seem to be any training that improves memory across the board.

“Organizing one’s life, such as parking in similar places even if it means walking a bit longer, reduces the need for memory,” Ericsson says. “Similarly, returning objects to their correct place will reduce memory for where you last put it.”

His advice for people wanting to improve their memory?

Pick out some tasks that you are motivated to improve or material you want to remember.

Look up some of the good books on how best to improve memory for that type of task or material.

Set aside 10 to 15 minutes each day when your mind is the most fresh and train your memory with the best exercises.

Ericsson says that if a person maintains this practice schedule, his or her memory will improve.

After all is said and done, hopefully one day you’ll be able to say, “Thanks for the memories!”

The temperature is rising, the kids are officially out of school and it’s time once again for summer vacation. Before you head out on your next adventure, you’ll want to make sure your vehicle is ready to take on whatever the road throws your way.

Tires – Be sure to check both the tire pressure and tread on all 5 of your tires (don’t forget about the spare). If you are unsure what your tire pressure should be, look for the manufacturer sticker when you open the passenger side door. To check your tread life, take a penny and place it in between the tread with Lincoln’s head pointed down. If you can see the top of the former President’s head, it is recommended that you replace your tires before embarking on your trip. Many regions have patterns of afternoon rain storms that could be dangerous on tires without adequate tread. Also, be sure to check the valve stem for cracks.

Fluids – Heat will wreak havoc on an engine. Make sure your vehicle has plenty of vital fluids to keep your engine cool and vacation on track.

Be sure to change your oil before hitting the road and consider using thicker weight oil than you might normally use as the summer heat will thin the oil. Check and replace or refill each of the fluids under your vehicles hood, including: transmission fluid, differential fluid, power steering fluid, brake fluid, windshield wiper fluid and coolant.

Motor Engine Components

Battery and cables – Inspect the terminals on your battery. If they are corroded, clean the terminals with a mixture of baking soda and water. Also be on the lookout for any cracks or dirt. Hot weather drains the life from your battery quickly. Be sure to have it tested before setting out on your road trip to ensure your battery will make the trip with you and your family.

Radiator and hoses – Overheating is the leading cause of mechanical breakdowns on our nation’s highways. Check fluid levels in your radiator and for any cracks in the hoses connecting your radiator.

Other Components

Air Conditioning – The summer months bring the hottest temperatures in even the mildest climates. Checking to make sure your air conditioning is functioning properly before leaving will keep everyone smiling on your vacation. Turn the air conditioning on and cover a vent with your hand to check the fan speed and temperature of the air that is being produced. Be sure to listen for any unusual noises while it is running and then shut it off and listen for any noises.

Lights – Checking all interior and exterior lights on your vehicle will help keep you and your family safe on your journey. Have someone help you to check your headlights, high beams, turn signals, hazard lights, license plate light, brake lights, and interior lights.

Indicator lights – It’s never a good idea to drive with a check engine or other malfunctioning indicator light illuminated on your dash, especially on a long trip. Engine problems should be diagnosed and fixed prior to departure to keep your vehicle running smoothly throughout your trip.

Mercedes-Benz’s R-Class serves as the brand’s multi-passenger flagship. With room for the whole family, this executive express crossover-wagon-minivan has long made a great vehicle in which to be hauled around in luxury.

Nose job and more
The 2011 R-Class had a bit of nip and tuck treatment in the off-season. Receiving both a nose job and a butt-lift, the R now boasts the brand’s more modern style. With a newly redesigned expanse of sheetmetal forward of the A-pillar, the R350 now appears to be from the same family as the rest of the cars in the M-B stable.

In addition to the grille, the front end features daylight running lights or new chrome-ringed fog lamps in the grille’s lower bout. Overall, the appearance is newer, wider, and, in M-B speak, more assertive. In the rear, the exhaust finishers are integrated into the rear fascia. Among the safety features, Mercedes-Benz Blind-spot assist, Pre-Safe and Neck-Pro front seat head restraints.

Beyond that, the R-Class features the same profile as seen in last year’s car. The R is available in Europe as a short and long wheelbase car. In North America, it will only be available as a long-wheelbase model. All US models will be 4Matic-equipped, with Mercedes-Benz’s all-wheel-drive system.

Stylistically speaking
As a long wheelbase vehicle, the R350 and R350 BlueTEC are identical save for BlueTEC badging on the sides and the rear. With its stylized two-box design, it cuts an imposing shape (because, truth be told, it is big) that we have even seen adopted by many forward thinking New York City-based limousine companies. Goodbye Town Car, hello R-Class.

Configurable as a four, five, six or seven-passenger vehicle, it can be equipped with center consoles between the middle row of seats, as well as a back row that reclines. The amount of cargo space depends only on how many seats you fold forward, or order in the first place. R-Class vehicles ordered without third-row seating are equipped with an under-floor storage area. Overall capacity is 15.2-cubic feet with all three rows in the upright position. Fold them flat and capacity tops out at 85-cubic feet.

And luxury abounds inside. An AMG sport package with custom seats and trim is one way to go. A refreshed interior with aluminum and chrome highlights and extravagant wood trim dresses up the cabin. The seating configuration is also good.

A mover or shaker?
North American models of the R-Class offer a choice of two different types of engines both mated to the same 4Matic all-wheel drive system.

Leading off is the 3.5-liter V6 gas engine producing 268 horsepower and 258 lb-ft. of torque. EPA estimates rate this engine at 14 mpg city/19 mpg highway, hardly impressive figures.

But order the BlueTEC diesel-powered version of the R350 and you end up with the who’s-your-daddy of crossovers, producing a mere 210 horsepower but 400 lb-ft. of tree stump-pulling torque. Turbocharged and intercooled, it produces the bulk of its power in the 1,200-2,400 rpm range, while the gas shows its oomph further up the power band in the 2,400-5,000 rpm neighborhood. In BlueTEC trim, look for numbers in the 18/24 mpg range.

Both R350 engines share the seven-speed automatic transmission. Do-it-yourselfers can row the tranny with plastic steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. The R 350 rides on a suspension comprised of upper and lower control arms, coil springs, shocks and stabilizer bar in front and a load-leveling air suspension out back.

We found the hydraulic-assisted, rack and pinion steering to give very good road feel, especially given the vehicle’s bulk. With a fully loaded curb weight of 5,280 pounds, the BlueTEC achieves 0-60 mph in 8.6 seconds. Shave off 231 pounds for the gas-powered version, and you’ll see a 0.6 sec improvement.

According to M-B, the 4Matic permanent all wheel drive is where perfect traction lives for all conditions.

In many ways a traditional definition of a Mercedes-Benz, the R-Class benefits from a modest refresh that should keep it relatively relevant through the rest of its product cycle.

Volkswagen’s Jetta TDI Cup Edition with turbo diesel is top of VW’s Jetta lineup, but you don’t need to spend top dollar to get a sporty handling sedan with killer fuel economy.

I managed between 35.7 and 49.5 mpg, the lower figure being a mix of city and highway driving and the upper figure purely a highway drive to Indianapolis. It makes you wonder why folks pay more for a hybrid. The EPA rates the TDI at 30 mpg city and 41 highway.

I know that the word “diesel” doesn’t stir positive feelings. You think smelly, noisy and slow to accelerate. But today’s new turbo-diesels, such as the 2.0-liter I4 model in the Jetta, are different beasts than the grumblers from the 1970s.

They don’t smoke and stink up the neighborhood. Also, they have a lower engine tone than a gas engine, but they do not growl or grumble as in the past.

There’s a lot of torque here, and once you hit second gear you can mash the pedal to use that power. So this will fly down an entry ramp getting to highway speeds. The standard 6-speed manual transmission is a little tricky when you first start the car, even on a warm summer day. When you first shift into reverse, or into first gear, the car is prone to stalling, and the link up to second also can be balky, but just for the first couple minutes of operation. I decided the clutch was a little touchy, but it really seems you’re best off if you get the revs up a bit before making those initial shifts.

The car is rated at 140 horsepower, which is fine for a 3,230-pound car that rides on a 101.5-inch wheelbase.

Unlike most sedans though, the Jetta feels sporty with fairly precise handling and a moderately heavy steering feel. Turn the car into a corner and its 18-inch all-season radials give the car excellent grip and there’s no body lean. Underneath is four-wheel independent suspension so the ride is sporty too, but not severe.

Braking is fine from the four-wheel disc brakes. Traction and stability control systems are standard.

Inside, the Jetta is pretty plain, mostly black but with a carbon fiber look trim on the dash and doors. Seats are cloth and there are cloth padded inserts in the doors. This one added red, white and gray plaid inserts in the seats. That livened up the interior a bit.

A plus is the tilt/telescope steering wheel with radio, phone and trip computer buttons on the hub. The Jetta also has power windows and mirrors and metal-faced pedals. There are automatic lights too, but you must turn a knob to activate your dash lights.

The radio works well and sounds good. Climate control knobs are large and there’s a storage bin under the center stack and a couple cup holders between the seats. The center armrest is well padded and there’s a big glove box.

A real benefit for younger families is the large, 16-cubic-foot trunk and rear seats that both split and fold flat to boost cargo room.

When Wolfgang Duerheimer had said in April that he was looking for a thousand people who were seriously interested in making a business case with his company he must have had the Porsche 918 Spyder in mind. The car to be unveiled at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show was what he had been referring to.

It was just months later that Porsche announced the receipt of the 1000 probable and interested customers. The customers had sent in their letter of interest and this was enough for Porsche to put the gear in grid for its production to start on the hybrid supercar to come. Official booking would also soon commence. It’s at Pebbel Beach where this booking could be completed against instant cash deposit.

Given the overwhelming response received for the 918, the Porsche people are raring to go into production mode full swing, revealed a Porsche employee in an interview. Figures however he mentioned had not yet been finalized and therefore no official announcement can yet be expected.

The specification of the car runs thus. A V8 engine which has an output of more than 500 hp will be powering the car. It also has three electric motors which provide a power of 218 hp. As far as emission standards are concerned the engine spews out just 70 grams of CO2 per kilometer. Fuel consumption of the car is 3 liter / 100 km which translates to 94 mpg imp. Pick up of the car would be a 0 to 60 mph in 3.2 seconds and maintain top speeds of 198 mph. The car also had a lap time of 7.30 minutes at the Nordschleife of Nürburgring. This is faster than the Porsche Carrera GT.

BMW has revealed the first official details of its second-generation X3 prior to its world debut at the upcoming Paris motor show.

Set to go on sale in the United States in January 2011, BMW says the new X3 will be priced close to the outgoing model. The upmarket off-roader has been completely redesigned and reengineered in a move BMW hopes will see it emulate the first-generation model’s success, sales of which have now topped the 600,000 mark worldwide since its introduction in 2003.

The picture of a preproduction prototype issued by BMW reveal that the new X3 retains the two-box silhouette and hard-edged styling theme established by its predecessor, although the tape disguise continues to hide its more subtle design features and detailing.

Riding on adapted four-wheel-drive underpinnings from the all-new 3-series (the E30 due next year), the X3 has grown in every dimension. The increase in size better positions the X3 neatly between the X1 and the X5.

Inside, the new X3 sports a noticeably higher-quality dashboard and trim materials than its rather low-rent predecessor, something BMW admits was necessary given the increased competition the new four-wheel drive faces. The instruments and switchgear are of a level comparable to those found in the new 5-series. The increased external dimensions help improve interior accommodation.

BMW confirmed to AutoWeek that the X3 will be offered with the choice of four engines when sales begin. Gasoline units set to underpin North American sales include a 268-hp naturally aspirated 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder in the X3 xDrive28i and a 302-hp, twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder in the X3 xDrive35i. Europe also gets two turbocharged common-rail diesels.

Other engines are planned, including a 201-hp, 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel in a midrange X3 xDrive23d model. An ActiveHybrid version is also in the works, according to highly placed BMW sources, although it isn’t likely to go on sale until 2012 at the earliest.

The entry-level X3 xDrive20d comes standard with a Getrag-engineered six-speed manual gearbox. The remainder gets ZF’s latest eight-speed automatic with automatic stop/start, the first time such a combination has been applied to a BMW model. Along with the standard four-wheel-drive layout applied to all initial second-generation X3 models, BMW says it is also looking at introducing a rear-wheel-drive version X3 sDrive28i as part of efforts to further penetrate the U.S. market, where its rival, the Mercedes-Benz GLK, sees a 40 percent take rate for the rear-wheel-drive model.

In a move that provides hints to the mechanical make-up of the upcoming 3-series, BMW confirms that the X3 adopts a newly developed mechanical-electric steering system from ThyssenKrupp in place of the ZF-engineered hydraulic system found on the outgoing model. The German steelmaking giant, which purchased rival Mercedes-Benz parent company Daimler’s steering system division as part of diversification plans, is expected to play an increasingly prominent role in the development of future steering systems at BMW.

And to answer long-standing criticism of the X3’s too-harsh ride, BMW has provided the second-generation model with VDC, or variable damping control. The new system offers three levels of damper stiffness–normal, sport and sport plus. Altering the damping also serves to change the threshold settings of DTC, or dynamic traction control.

Unlike the first-generation X3, which hailed from Magna Steyr’s manufacturing plan in Austria, the site set to produce the new Mini Countryman, the new model will roll off BMW’s own production lines in Spartanburg, S.C.

If you ever though that a Volvo couldn’t be sexy, prepare to be surprised. Nouphone J. Bansasine designed this slick 2015 Volvo S90 concept during his internship at the Volvo Monitoring and Concept Center–birthplace of the XC90, S80, S60, and the Safety Concept Car that would become the current Volvo C30–and it’s probably the sweetest looking Volvo that we’ve ever seen.

The S90 has the four-door coupe profile that is so very popular with automakers these days, but it has what appear to be rear suicide doors, a la Mazda RX-8 or Mini Clubman. At the nose of the concept, Bansasine gave the vehicle a long hood, aggressive LED headlamps, and a large, gaping grill. The S90 has some seriously deep body sculpting that terminates with an attractively upturned rear end and boomerang-shaped LED tail lamps. It has big wheels, a low roofline, blacked-out B-pillars, and flared front fenders that complete the sports car aesthetic.

Volvo hasn’t released information as to what sort of power train would live beneath this hypothetical S90 concept’s hood. But considering that this car is meant to compete in the premium sport sedan segment, we’re assuming that it would have to be pretty powerful to run with the likes of the Porsche Panamera and the still-conceptual BMW Gran Coupe. The presence of an odd, green badge on the concept’s rear possibly hints at hybrid aspirations. And because this is a Volvo, we’d expect a suite of active safety technologies and perhaps even an all-wheel-drive system.

Carnegie, MacArthur, Ford, Rockefeller: These titans of industry have lent their names — and their fortunes — to foundations and endowments that assure their namesakes are remembered for good works long after their deaths.

Locally, you don’t have to be a billionaire — or even all that wealthy — to be a philanthropist. The Community Foundation of North Florida makes it possible for Average Joes to create lasting charitable legacies.

The organization is one of 700 community foundations that have sprouted up around the nation since the first one was established in 1914. The basis for their widespread popularity is simple: Donors experience all the benefits of having a private foundation but forgo the troublesome expenses, restrictions and administrative burdens.

These advantages haven’t been lost on Tallahassee residents. The Community Foundation of North Florida channels thousands of dollars into Big Bend charities every year — for a total of about $5.8 million in grants since its inception in 1997.

However, there is always room to grow. Florida’s largest community foundation, the Gulf Coast Foundation of Venice, started in 1995 with a $85 million endowment from the sale of the southwest Florida city’s not-for-profit hospital. That foundation’s funds have grown to $180 million, and over the years it has passed out more than $100 million, mostly to benefit the region.

“We don’t have those kind of funds yet,” says Joy Watkins, president of the Community Foundation of North Florida.

Administering more than 150 charitable funds, the local foundation does the so-called dirty work of the nonprofit sector, such as handling investments and accounting, filing annual tax returns and providing annual audits. Because of its behind-the-scenes role, the organization maintains a relatively low profile compared to its tremendous level of outreach.

Many current donors only learned about the foundation while working with a financial adviser or when trying to set up their own private foundation.

“The Community Foundation is hidden because we aren’t out on the front lines,” Watkins explains. “We are back-office facilitators of charitable giving.”

While the foundation oversees the administrative details and manages investment of the funds, donors guide how their charitable dollars are spent. Philanthropists can establish different types of funds, depending on how involved or hands-off they would like to be with their gifts. For example, one individual might choose to establish a Donor Advised Fund and make regular recommendations to the board as to how he or she would like to appropriate grants. Another donor might choose to invest in a particular cause through a Field of Interest Fund or perpetually give to select charities through a Designated Fund.

For entrepreneur Chuck Mitchell, who has been a Community Foundation of North Florida donor since the late 1990s along with his wife, Patty, a Legacy Fund was the ideal option.

“My wife and I don’t have children, but we want our estate to continue to give back to the community after we’re gone,” he says.

Ultimately, by offering a variety of options to donors, the foundation helps the maximum number of people find a pathway to attaining their charitable goals. Moreover, the fringe benefits of working with the foundation, such as tax advantages and professional administration, only help donors to expand their philanthropic choices.

For many donors, organization is one of the greatest perks of working with the Community Foundation of North Florida. Giving through a single fund allows them to track all of their annual gifts on one tax receipt.

Also, rather than responding to on-the-spot solicitations by sporadically writing checks here and there, donors have the advantage of being able to plan and prioritize their contributions.

“It’s been a great mechanism,” Mitchell says. “It’s helped a lot of people to think about their giving in a more methodical way.”

Another basic benefit of donating through the foundation is being linked to a network of fellow philanthropists. Donors can become acquainted with one another, building relationships and generating discussion of a wider range of charitable causes.

“It’s helped heighten my awareness of different needs in the community,” Mitchell says.

The foundation, perhaps as a result of this exchange of ideas, has distributed grants to more than 400 nonprofit organizations over the years.

Tax breaks are yet another clear advantage of working with the Community Foundation of North Florida. Many donors fund their charitable gifts through appreciated assets, such as stocks and real estate, avoiding capital gains tax and directing their resources into the local economy rather than to the federal government.
“That’s the bottom line,” Mitchell stresses. “Most of the places, almost all of it is local. We want to give back to the community that’s helped us for so many years.”

Securing funds for local causes has been the primary purpose of the foundation since it was initially organized by the Tallahassee Regional Estate Planning Council, a group composed of estate planning professionals including attorneys, accountants and financial planners. Often, says Watkins — who was herself an estate planning attorney — clients would come to them with a desire to set up their own charitable foundation, only to be dissuaded by the amount of work — and money — required to create and operate one.

“(Estate planners) saw that there were pots of charitable dollars that could have stayed in our community but didn’t,” Watkins says.

Over the years, the Community Foundation of North Florida has been able to turn that situation around. While individuals are not required to keep donations from their funds in the community, more than 90 percent of the foundation’s grant money has been given to organizations addressing needs within the Big Bend.

Mitchell credits the foundation’s staff and board for making the foundation a practical success, rather than just a lofty idea.

“They don’t just offer good stewardship of your assets,” he says. “They can also help grow it in a wise way.”

Amidst a whirlwind of diverse causes and donors, the foundation has kept sight of its simple and benevolent purpose.

“We are here to help people do what they want to do,” Watkins says.

Want to Know More?

Any interested party can establish their own Community Foundation of North Florida fund with an initial gift of $5,000 or more. They can then add any amount to the fund.

Anyone also can donate any amount to the nearly 80 nonprofit groups that have created their own funds or endowments.

It’s a Saturday morning, and suddenly you’re faced with an empty blue cooler and a bag of ice. What to pack?

All beachgoers, road-trippers and pool loungers face the dreaded food challenge on summer weekends. For families, outings often are daylong affairs, and parents have the daunting task of packing enough nutritious food and snacks to keep the kids fed, happy and out of the fast-food restaurants lining our highways. Not to mention finding foods that won’t wilt or spoil as the ice inevitably begins to melt.

Let’s face it — this isn’t just a headache for families. Young couples and groups of friends often fall back on the chips-and-beer strategy, neglecting more creative and healthier solutions. So whether you’re loading up for a family or friends, we’ve compiled a handy guide to summertime cooler packing that will have you yearning to hit the road.

Pick a Cooler

Your first step should be making sure you have the right type of cooler for your journey. Is it a short trip across town to a pool or to a nearby beach? Consider a lightweight, disposable cooler. These come in varying sizes, shapes and materials. Contrary to the name, you can actually reuse these coolers, and they’re recyclable. Most disposable coolers are actually cooler “bags” made with vinyl on the outside, which makes them easy to clean off, and lined with styrene foams measuring ½ inch to 1 inch thick. There also are disposable coolers made of Styrofoam that are sturdier but cannot be recycled.

If it’s a lengthier trip or a day spent entirely at the beach, consider using a hard-shell plastic cooler, which also comes in different sizes and colors. It’s better to err on the side of a cooler that is too big, because ice can take up more space than you realize. Plastic coolers generally are more durable than the disposable ones, but not as lightweight. They’re best if you have to spend a lot of time outdoors, because they do a good job of keeping things cool — and the food inside can’t be easily smashed.

Another option is thermoelectric coolers, which can be used to heat or cool items. They require a power source, such as a connection to a car’s cigarette lighter. The good news is that they don’t require ice, which can cut down on the messiness factor; the bad news is that they cannot be used outdoors without a nearby power outlet.

Shop Smart

So you’ve picked the right cooler. The next step is to shop for items to take with you. Make a shopping list specifically for your road trip or beach visit, and buy your food the night before you leave so there’s no morning scramble to the grocery store.

Make sure your shopping list includes drinks, condiments, disposable forks and knives, plates, napkins, cups and anything else you might need, such as a cutting knife or bottle opener.

Decide before your grocery store visit whether you’re shopping just for snacks or for more complete meals as well. It’s easier to pile a cooler full of snacks and call it a day; however, preparing satisfying meals isn’t difficult and, if done right, won’t take up much space in a cooler. Just be sure that what you’re packing won’t wilt or melt easily.

Also, in your rush to get out the door, save yourself from a car full of cranky “Are we there yet?” kids by making sure everyone has breakfast before hitting the road.

Healthy Snacks

When shopping for snacks, it’s tempting to reach for the Doritos. But before loading up on chips, know that there are plenty of healthy, nutritious choices available.

Let’s start with fruit. Shop for fruits that will hold up well in a car or at the beach and don’t require much preparation. Cherries and grapes are good options, as are apples, but go for the pre-sliced or pre-packaged options that come with dips. (The downside is the trash these plastic packages create. Have a bag handy to contain it all.)

With vegetables, go for carrot or celery sticks, with peanut butter or ranch dressing to use for a dip. Use small Tupperware-style containers to hold the dip.

String cheese is another good option for kids or adults. They come in a wide range of flavors, including several non-fat and low-fat varieties. Avoid crackers, which can leave microscopic crumbs that will stay in your car for years.

There are also granola bars, which range from the healthy and protein-packed bars with nuts and peanut butter (Kashi bars are a good option) to the coated-in-chocolate, might-as-well-be-a-dessert bars. Buy whatever fits your personal preferences, but be aware that granola bars with chocolate will quickly melt under a strong sun.

And for a treat, there are plenty of sugar-free and fat-free pudding cups that come in a variety of flavors, from the traditional chocolate to strawberry and tapioca.

You can prepare other fun snacks at home, such as an enticing mix of bananas, yogurt and crushed cereal that can be made the night before.

Meals on the Go

Avoid hot dogs and hamburgers. They can be messy, especially when condiments are involved. The exception is if you’re going to a nearby pool and there is a grill available.

Sandwiches are tricky. Sometimes they hold up great, and other times they are a mushy mess. If you bring sandwiches, take great care in how you pack them. Wrap sandwiches in paper towels and then put them in plastic, resealable bags. Make sure they are placed toward the top of the cooler to prevent heavier items from crushing them.

Go for sandwiches that are uncomplicated — now is not the time to try a seven-layer deli delight with all the works. There is nothing wrong with the classic peanut butter and jelly, but use thin layers of the jelly to avoid bleeding through the bread. You can also mix it up by using almond butter, different types of jams, and bagels instead of bread. Check out the Peanut Butter and Co. website (ilovepeanutbutter.com)
for more inspiration, such as the “Dark Chocolate Dreams” sandwich.

For deli-style sandwiches, use lean luncheon meats and low-fat cheese with a thin layer of mustard or mayonnaise. Skip the lettuce and tomatoes. Another great choice is hummus and pita bread, which can be used for a snack or meal.

Still another delicious option is mini-burritos. Make a traditional burrito but cut it in half and wrap it in foil. It stays together nicely and makes for an easy beach meal that kids and adults can enjoy.

Beyond Beer

It’s important to bring lots of water if you’re going to the beach or a pool. It can quickly heat up by mid-morning, and you should have plenty of hydrating drinks such as water and sports drinks on hand. Skip the diet sodas and juices, which won’t replenish your body’s fluids as efficiently.

With that in mind, if you have a designated driver and want to partake in a little adult fun, there are plenty of fun summer cocktails that are easy to make outdoors. Be aware, of course, of the alcohol and drinks policy at the beach or pool you are headed to. Some allow only certain kinds of bottles (plastic, no glass), while others ban all alcoholic beverages.

You can certainly get a variety of exotic cocktails at many beachside haunts. But one delicious drink that’s easy to pack into a cooler is a calimocho, which is a blend of wine and Coca-Cola. It sounds gross, but you won’t regret giving it a try.

If all else fails, there always are pre-mixed cocktails, which come in flavors from the simple lemonade to Long Island Iced Teas and pomegranate martinis. Just remember: These drinks have alcohol and a high sugar content, which can quickly dehydrate you.

Relax, It’s Vacation

Going on a road trip or the beach should be fun! This isn’t the time to prepare gourmet meals or worry about whether you’re getting enough servings of fruits and vegetables.

If you have kids, understand that some flexibility and bending of the nutritional rules will help you make it through the trip with fewer headaches. (Isn’t ice cream for dinner part of the fun?) Enjoy this time away from work, rules and diets.

When you’re driving, do you feel your car pulling to the left or the right? Does your steering wheel vibrate? Have you noticed that it has become more difficult to keep your vehicle driving in a straight line? Or that your steering wheel is not centered when you are driving down a straight road? A simple wheel alignment for your vehicle may solve all these problems and more.

How to Double-Check For an Alignment

To see if you need a wheel alignment, first check each tire and look for uneven wear patterns. You can do this by taking a coin to each tire and inserting it in the tread at the outside, center, and inside of the tire.

If the tread is deeper on the edges than in the center, the tire is over inflated.

If the tread is deeper in the center than the edges, the tire is under inflated.

If the tread is deeper on one side than the other, have your wheel alignment checked soon.

If you run your hand back and forth across the tread (be careful not to cut yourself on any debris) and the tread is smooth in one direction, but jagged in the other you have what is called a “saw-tooth” wear pattern caused by a toe-in problem. If your tires have a “saw-tooth” wear pattern, have the alignment checked as soon as possible as this can cause unsafe tire wear.

Aligning Your Tires

There are two types of wheel alignments, a two-wheel alignment and a four-wheel alignment. The four-wheel alignment is the best type of alignment to get for a vehicle. Having all four wheels aligned increases safety when driving down the road.

Having proper wheel alignment insures that your vehicle handles properly and returns the wheels on your vehicle to their correct angle. When your wheels are properly aligned you will not have to fight with your steering wheel when driving to make the car drive straight, or make the steering wheel stop vibrating. Maintaining proper wheel alignment can also increase gas mileage and decrease tire wear.

By making small adjustments and keeping up with regular maintenance items, like keeping your wheels aligned, can help you avoid a major breakdown in the future, and prolong the life of your vehicle.

If it has been longer than a year since your last alignment, and you are experiencing symptoms described here, or are unsure if you need an alignment, bring your vehicle into the Capital Eurocars Service Department. One of our highly trained Service Technicians can take a look at your vehicle, realign your vehicle’s wheels, and get you back on the road safely.

Mercedes-Benz is continuing its growth path. As in previous months, sales increased at a double-digit rate in April. Customer deliveries totaled 93,100 units (April 2009: 80,700), an increase of 15 percent.

“We are very satisfied with our sales development in April,” says Dr. Joachim Schmidt, Executive Vice President Sales and Marketing, Mercedes-Benz Cars.

“Our products are very popular with customers and we grew at a double-digit rate in nearly all markets. It’s a great start into the second quarter during which we plan to substantially boost sales. In line with the sales development, our incoming orders have increased significantly as well. That is particularly due to the high demand in China and the U.S. and the great success of the E- and S-Class.”

The Chinese market continues to be one of the main growth drivers. At 11,300 units (April 2009: 5,600), Mercedes-Benz posted a new sales record in the country and again doubled the number of its deliveries. Within the Asia-Pacific region, the brand’s deliveries rose by 26 percent in Japan and by 36 percent in Australia.

Mercedes-Benz also grew at a double-digit rate in the BRIC countries of India (plus 95 percent), Brazil (plus 77 percent), and Russia (plus 50 percent).

The positive trend of the past several months has also continued in the U.S., with sales there rising by 21 percent to 17,600 units (April 2009: 14,600). Mercedes-Benz was therefore the German premium brand with the highest sales volume in the country, enabling it to gain market share. In fact, Mercedes-Benz has been the German premium brand with the highest market share in the U.S. since the beginning of the year.

Mercedes-Benz delivered 24,200 passenger vehicles (April 2009: 23,000) to Western Europe (excluding Germany) in April, representing an increase of six percent on the same month last year. High growth rates were recorded for example in the UK (plus 12 percent), Belgium (plus 14 percent) and Austria (plus 27 percent).

Mercedes-Benz sold 21,600 units in Germany in April, thus nearly matching the level reached last year (April 2009: 22,100). Mercedes-Benz was able to buck the overall market trend and gained market share in April. Mercedes-Benz thus remains the most successful premium automaker on its home market.

Within the product portfolio, the new models of the E-Class continued to post very strong growth, with customer deliveries of the sedan rising by 52 percent to 17,200 units. That result once again put it far ahead of its competitors.

The E-Class convertible, which reached showrooms on March 27, is also very popular with customers. A total of 4,700 S-Class sedans were delivered to customers in April, up seven percent on the same month last year.

The C-Class is also very popular, with deliveries of the sedan up by eight percent to 19,600 units, while deliveries of the station wagon even rose by 19 percent.

A total of 9,000 (April 2009: 10,200) smart fortwo were delivered worldwide in April (minus 11 percent). The company expects sales of the smart brand to get a boost from the market launch of the new-generation smart fortwo, which will start in the third quarter of 2010.
